It was still snowing this morning and the following weather warning was still in place. The snow did clear out fairly quickly and there was lots of blue sky and sunshine. There had been a number of accidents overnight and early morning resulting in some of the highways being closed, particularly in the north, up and around Airdrie and Strathmore. By early afternoon most of the main roads were cleared of snow. This is very possibly one of the worst storms we have seen at this time of year.

Winter storm warning for Okotoks, High River & Claresholm

Further snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 centimetres by this evening in most localities.

This is a warning that dangerous winter weather conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions...Listen for updated statements.

An intense weather system over Southern Alberta will slowly move eastward into Saskatchewan today. Ahead of the low rain fell in many communities Wednesday with wet snow occurring along the foothills especially from Red Deer - Rocky Mountain House southward. As the low moves east today the winds will strengthen to north to northwest 50 gusting to 80 km/h and the precipitation will spread slowly eastwards.

Total snowfall amounts will generally be in the range of 10 to 20 centimetres for the storm but elevation effects will enhance amounts to 30 to 40 centimetres along portions of the southern foothills and through the Lethbridge..Cardston and Pincher Creek regions especially over higher terrain.

Over the Red Deer..Drumheller..And Brooks regions the snowfall will be highest over western sections.

In the Hanna Coronation and Medicine Hat regions northerly winds of 60 gusting to 90 km/h are expected to develop later this morning. Winds will gradually diminish this evening.

This winter storm can produce poor travelling conditions. Persons in or near these areas should be on the lookout for adverse weather conditions and listen for updated warnings.

It was a cloudy and rainy day today and only +2 by mid morning. The rain turned into snow and and we had around 3inches on our drive to clear. Due to the snow being wet at this time of year, the road conditions were terrible and visibility was very poor.

There is currently Winter Storm Warning in place today for the M.D. of Foothills near Okotoks and De Winton

Intermittent rain changing to snow by Thursday morning. Snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 centimetres by Thursday evening in most localities. This is a warning that dangerous winter weather conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions...Listen for updated statements.

An upper low pressure system will move across the Rockies into Southern Alberta today before moving slowly eastward along the Montana border. The storm will move into Saskatchewan by Thursday evening. Ahead of the low periods of rain have begun in many communities. As the low moves east the winds will shift to north to northwest 50 gusting to 70 km/h and the precipitation will change to snow over western and Southern Alberta. Snowfall amounts will generally be in the range of 10 to 20 centimetres, but elevation effects will enhance the snowfall to near 30 centimetres along portions of the southern foothills. Extremely poor visibilities can be expected at times with the strong winds and falling snow. Over the Red Deer..Drumheller..And Brooks regions the snowfall will be highest over western sections. Foothill areas to the west of Red Deer can also expect some snow but amounts look to be sub warning criteria at this time.

Wind warning for Okotoks, High River, Claresholm

Strong winds developing early this evening.

A low pressure system just east of Red Deer has combined with a cold front crossing Southern Alberta to generate strong winds over almost all areas of the southern province this evening. Most regions of Southern Alberta east of the Rockies and foothills have seen west winds of 60 to 70 km/h with gusts near 90 km/h. In a few localities these winds may give reduced visibilities in blowing dust.

Winds will gradually diminish this evening from the southwest as the system moves into east Central Alberta.

It started to snow at around 5.30pm and road conditions in Calgary and North of Calgary were terrible. The temperature dropped rapidly and the wind was freezing.

There were reports of a 54 car pile up in one area and electricity went out at the airport, which meant cancelled flights and in the NE leaving 51,000 without power.

However, Okotoks and High River got off very lightly with virtually nothing.
